The Mission Is Now
(Matthew 28:18-20; Genesis 12:1-3)
The Great Commission — Jesus’ command to His disciples to go into the world, make disciples, baptize, and teach — appears five times in Scripture…
Here are the five passages where the Great Commission is recorded:
Matthew 28:18-20 (NLT) Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
REVIEW FROM LAST WEEK:
1. God's Mission Began with a Promise
Genesis 12:2–3 (NLT) “I will bless you … and you will be a blessing to others. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.”
2. God’s Heart Has Always Been for the Nations
Psalm 67:1–2 (NLT) “May God be merciful and bless us. … May your ways be known throughout the earth, your saving power among people everywhere.”
3. We Are Now Part of God’s Ongoing Global Plan
Galatians 3:29 (NLT) “And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God's promise to Abraham belongs to you.”
We are Abraham’s spiritual heirs. His mission is now our mission.
TAKE-AWAY:
THE MISSION IS NOW
1. Jesus Gave a Clear Command
Matthew 28:19–20 (NLT) Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
2. The World Still Needs to Hear
Romans 10:14–15 (NLT) But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? 15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”
3. The Power to Go Comes from the Holy Spirit
Acts 1:8 (NLT) “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere…”
HOW TO PRACTICALLY CARRY OUT THE MISSION
1. Start with Prayer
Colossians 4:2–4 (NLT) Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. 3 Pray for us, too, that God will give us many opportunities to speak about his mysterious plan concerning Christ. That is why I am here in chains. 4 Pray that I will proclaim this message as clearly as I should.
2. Share Your Story
Acts 1:8 (NLT) You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere…
3. Live Missionally Every Day
Matthew 5:16 (NLT) In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
4. Invite People
John 1:46 (NLT) “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” “Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.
5. Support the Mission Beyond Yourself
Romans 10:15 (NLT) And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”
6. Disciple Others
Matthew 28:20 (NLT) Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
7. Be Ready Always
1 Peter 3:15 (NLT) Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.
BIG PICTURE
The mission isn’t another item on your to-do-list—it’s a lifestyle.
The Mission Is Now
1. Christ has commanded it (Matthew 28)
2. The lost are waiting for it (Romans 10).
3. The Spirit empowers it (Acts 1).
The Great Commission is not a future assignment; it’s a present reality.
Application:
Remember:
“The Mission Is Now—because souls can’t wait, and Jesus is with us today.”
